Conax AS and Pittsburgh International Telecommunications (PIT) join forces to bring worldwide ethnic media to North American consumers
Conax AS, a leading supplier of state-of-the-art, highly innovative solutions for Smart Card-based Conditional Access (CA) systems and security and payment solutions for the digital broadcast industry, has joined forces with Pittsburgh International Telecommunications (PIT) to open up the North American market for leading international ethnic media channels.

PIT maintains one of the world's most extensive teleport facilities, and with this joint venture will bring Conax-coded ethnic programming to the North American satellite footprint. Conax's vouchers and smart cards open the potential for more flexible payment and ordering options. With these cards, consumers can choose from more than standard monthly subscription packages offered by most cable systems.
With Conax's open, interoperable and royalty-free STBs, content suppliers can offer their customers an inexpensive alternative to decode special channels, such as those prevalent in the ethnic market. In this system, the ethnic customer only buys their chosen specialized channels and not a bundle of unnecessary services.
"With smart cards, customers only need to purchase what they are interested in," commented Ernst Thue, Conax CEO. "This is of benefit to international media channels that might not possess the critical mass to be picked up by conventional cable and satellite operators. Programming can be event- or time-driven so customers have a less costly alternative than bundled television packages and tiers."
As the fastest growing CA-vendor for the past three years, Conax, a globally oriented player, maintains a solid client base in 50 countries and will draw upon these relationships to bring international content to North America via PIT's facility. Broadcasters in areas as diverse as India and Pakistan, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam, Korea, the Balkan countries and Israel will now have the chance to broadcast their programming securely to ethnic communities in North America.

"This will allow high security for direct-to-home satellite transmission of a broad range of ethnic programming."
"We have chosen PIT as our initial North American teleport partner as its satellite coverage already includes the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, where Conax also operates," said Ernst Thue, Conax CEO. "PIT is ideal for ethnic programming because its facility consists of 40 satellite antennae operating in the C and Ku-bands along with fibre and microwave connectivity. PIT can handle and transmit any type of program from virtually any location around the world."
Conax will be exhibiting for the fourth time at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas this April (NAB Booth No. SU9646), where it will be demonstrating Conax CAS7 to the digital broadcast industry.
