Conax delivers Conditional Access services to DTH operation in West Africa

onax AS, a leading supplier of conditional access technology for digital TV, has signed a contract for delivering conditional access services to the Frontage Satellite Television platform in West Africa.

Mar 8, 2004

This is an operational agreement, where Conax is responsible for the operation and security of the channels. Frontage Communications will deliver a bouquet of 30 channels under the brand name Frontage Satellite Television (FSTV), including channels dedicated to news and sports, as well as foreign and local movies. The channel will be uplinked from the United Kingdom, with a planned commercial launch in April.

"Frontage Satellite Television offers unique programs of which it needs to control the distribution", says Ruben Famuyibo, Executive Chairman at FSTV. “There are a range of good reasons for using the Conax system, including their excellent security track record and no-royalty policy on Set-Top-Boxes. However, the main reason, which also makes me very confident of having made the right choice, is the fact that they have an outstanding and long-time experience on handling the day-to-day operation of Pay-TV channels", adds Ruben Famuyibo.

The establishment of the FSTV service is being managed by Constant Consulting Ltd, based in the UK. Constant Consulting have been responsible for the evaluation and choice of all of the primary systems associated with the FSTV launch, including the final selection of Conax as the conditional access provider.

"The global conditional access market is very competitive", commented Alan Constant of Constant Consulting, "but the commercial and technical package offered by Conax gave them a clear lead. Their no-royalty policy tells us that they are confident in the long term robustness of their product, and this was a major factor in their winning the contract".

"Conax is very pleased to have won this contract with FSTV, and we observe once again that the flexibility of our business models and our ability to offer practical solutions for our customers makes us very competitive in emerging markets. We look forward to supporting FSTV with the operation of their channels and in the build up of a secure revenue stream", says Ole Hansvold, Executive Vice President and COO, Conax AS.

About FSTV
FSTV is a new television service, providing direct-to-home DVB television programming for the Nigerian market. It is the brainchild of Reuben Famuyibo, Executive Chairman of FSTV, and a leading figure in Nigerian business and politics. The initial launch of the service will comprise 20 channels, of which four will be dedicated FSTV productions - news, sport and general entertainment - with the remainder being premium quality pass-though channels. The service will initially be supported by subscription, using a novel pay-as-you-go scratch card system, with limited advertiser support planned as the service penetration grows. Ultimately, up to 30 channels are planned to complete the service.
